Shepparton, 17th April 2026 – Goulburn Murray Community Leadership (GMCL) has celebrated 30 years of impact with a landmark Gala event, bringing together 150 community leaders, alumni, partners, and supporters from across the region.
The evening highlighted the powerful legacy of the Fairley Leadership Program, which for nearly three decades has built a strong network of leaders driving positive change across the Goulburn Murray.
From the moment guests arrived, the evening reflected the strength of a community built on collaboration and commitment. Guided by MC Neha Samar FF’21, the event program brought together voices from across generations of the Fairley Leadership Program - each contributing to a powerful narrative of leadership in action.
Keynote speaker Cathy McGowan AO set the tone for the evening, sharing reflections on the importance of regional leadership and the role individuals play in shaping their communities. This was followed by a candid and insightful panel discussion led by Board Member, Shara Scott FF’22. Panelists included long-term patron Ross McPherson AM, past Executive Director Lisa McKenzie OAM FF’97, past board member and Chair, Sam Birrell MP FF’13, and current Chair, Lacey Nicholson FF’22 - who brought honesty and depth to the realities and impact of leadership across the region.

Throughout the night, presenters shared personal stories of growth, challenge and connection - reminding the audience that leadership is not defined by titles, but by action and influence.
Executive Officer Jesse Mitchell FF’23 said the event was not just a celebration, but a reflection of a thriving movement.
“When you look around the room, you’re not just seeing individuals - you’re seeing a network, a movement of people who care deeply about this region and are actively shaping its future.”
Since its inception, GMCL has focused on cultivating “a willing, ready and able pool of community leaders” to respond to the complex challenges and opportunities facing regional communities.
More than 700 alumni have now graduated from the program, contributing across local government, business, community organisations, health, education and beyond.
Mitchell, a 2023 Fairley Fellow, shared her own journey through the program, describing it as life-changing.
“This program changed my life. It changed my trajectory. It gave me confidence, connection and purpose.”
She emphasised that the program’s true strength lies not just in individual growth, but in the ripple effect of leadership across the region.
“Leadership isn’t about titles - it’s about action, influence, and creating more leaders.”

While celebrating its achievements, GMCL also used the Gala to highlight the need for continued investment to sustain and grow leadership development in the region.
Following the loss of state government funding in recent years, the organisation has adapted its delivery model, strengthened partnerships, and continued to deliver impactful programs.
“Programs like Fairley don’t just happen — they exist because people invest in them.”
Funds raised on the night will support operations and the Fairley Alumni Scholarship, ensuring future participants can access the program regardless of financial circumstances.
“If we truly believe in leadership and opportunity, we need to ensure the next generation can step into this journey.”

As part of the 30-year milestone, GMCL has launched the Faces of Fairley project — an initiative to capture and share the stories of alumni and community impact across the region.
Rather than traditional awards, the organisation is inviting the community to nominate individuals whose leadership reflects the values and impact of the program.
“Leadership doesn’t always look like awards. Often, it looks like persistence, courage, and a whole lot of heart.”
With a continued focus on sustainability and securing long term funding, partnerships and regional collaboration, GMCL is positioning itself for the next phase of growth.
“The future of this program, and leadership in our region, depends on what we choose to invest in today”, Board Chair, Lacey Nicholson FF’22 said. “The message tonight has been clear – this program has changed the trajectory of our region and the program continuing is important to its future prosperity. Tonight we celebrate 30 years, but our region is relying on us to see us celebrating another important milestone of 35 or 40 year in the future”
GMCL also acknowledges its alumni and community champions whose ongoing passion has built a strong and enduring leadership network, and its sponsors and supporters, whose contributions are critical to sustaining and growing leadership development across the region.
“Growing this movement isn’t just about what we do — it’s about who we bring with us.”
Behind the scenes, the event was made possible by the dedication of many. GMCL acknowledged the leadership of its Board, past and present, along with the efforts of the Gala Planning Committee, Alumni Committee and volunteers who brought the event to life. Special recognition was given to Kimberley Chu FF’22 and GMCL Programs Coordinator, for her coordination and support, and Drew Walker, Musician, for helping create an energetic and engaging atmosphere with her musical talent.
The organisation is calling on businesses, community leaders, and supporters to contribute, partner, and help expand the impact of leadership development across the Goulburn Murray.
