The visit featured a series of enlightening sessions with prominent leaders and institutions, leaving participants inspired and ready to make a profound difference.
The journey began with a powerful session led by Sonia Boland from the Australian Institute of Sport hosted at the Regional Australia Institute Hub. Boland's career journey highlighted the importance of fostering environments where individuals can 'win well.' She emphasised the values of care, integrity, fair play, and pride, laying the foundation for a profound understanding of ethical leadership for the cohort.
The cohort then had the privilege of hearing from Licia Heath, CEO, of Women for Election. Licia’s story of her journey into politics resonated deeply, demonstrating the significant power and responsibility that leaders hold. Her message was a call to action, showcasing the immense potential for political leaders to enact meaningful and lasting change.
Liz Ritchie, a Fairley Fellow from 2006, provided invaluable insights into the role of the Regional Australia Institute. She reflected on her life experiences that have shaped her passionate advocacy for Australia's regions. Ritchie's discussion underscored the vital importance of informed and fervent advocacy in representing regional interests, inspiring the cohort to champion their own communities with renewed commitment.
A visit to Parliament House offered the cohort an unparalleled look at the workings of Australian democracy. Exploring the historic building and observing question time imparted a deeper appreciation for the democratic process and the crucial role of civic engagement in shaping our nation's future.
Several Parliamentary Members shared their perspectives on regional advocacy, stressing the importance of understanding the people they serve and the pivotal role of community leaders. Their insights reinforced the essential nature of informed and empathetic leadership in driving community development and fostering a sense of belonging.
In a collaborative session with the Committee for Ballarat Future Shapers program, the cohort engaged in inspiring discussions about the role of the National Press Club and regional priorities. These conversations fostered a profound sense of unity and shared purpose, highlighting the collective effort needed to address community challenges and create a brighter future.
The Fairley Leadership Program's visit to Canberra has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on its participants. Armed with new insights, inspiration, and a burning passion to drive positive change, these future changemakers are ready to return to the Goulburn Murray region. They are ready to apply the invaluable lessons they've gained, sparking a wave of transformation and progress in their communities.
