Media Release - 24th February 2025

Graduates of the Fairley Leadership Program (FLP) recently stepped up to run for local elections, bringing their extensive experience in playing pivotal roles in the region to the forefront, while the 2024 Program participants joined over 700 Alumni at a Graduation on Wednesday 20th November.

The Fairley Leadership Program continues to be a cornerstone of leadership development and community engagement in the Goulburn Murray region. In a recent radio interview, the program’s Executive Officer highlighted its ongoing commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue, collaboration, and leadership development that drives positive change in the region.

Reflecting on her own journey, Jesse Mitchell, Executive Officer of Goulburn Murray Community Leadership, shared why they initially joined the program: “I saw Fairley as an opportunity to develop my leadership skills and contribute more effectively to my community. The program is a launchpad that provides emerging leaders with the tools, networks, and confidence to drive sustainable community projects.”

For over 25 years, the Fairley Leadership Program has played a vital role in shaping local leadership, equipping participants with the knowledge, connections, and real-world experience needed to tackle pressing regional challenges. The program’s alumni network includes a diverse group of business leaders, community advocates, and changemakers, many of whom continue to have a lasting impact on the region.

“Leadership isn’t static—it must evolve and adapt to meet the changing needs of our communities,” the EO emphasised. “Fairley provides a critical space for collaboration, ensuring that leaders are prepared to tackle challenges and create lasting change.”

With regional communities facing economic, social, and environmental challenges, there is a growing need for strong, well-supported leadership. Goulburn Murray Community Leadership is dedicated to providing capacity-building initiatives that empower communities to achieve long-term prosperity. Programs such as the Fairley Leadership Program, serve as a conduit for meaningful dialogue and collaboration, fostering partnerships that lead to real, measurable impact.

However, sustainable funding is essential to maintaining and expanding Fairley’s work. The EO stressed the importance of securing resources to sustain leadership programs, enhance capacity-building efforts, and ensure the program remains adaptive and responsive to emerging community needs.

Looking ahead, Goulburn Murray Community Leadership aims to expand its reach and deepen its impact by strengthening its alumni network, increasing accessibility, and fostering long-term leadership development.

“My vision is to ensure GMCL continues to be a launchpad for leaders who want to make a real difference,” the EO said. “By investing in leadership, we are investing in the future of our communities. We need businesses, government, and the broader community to support this mission, whether through funding, mentorship, or active participation.”
